Statement from Secretary of State John F. Kerry
As-Salaam Alaikum and hello.
On this important anniversary I wanted to speak with you, not only as the American Secretary of State, but as one of the millions of people around the world inspired by your courage. Today we remember what so many Libyans risked to speak out against the Qadhafi regime and stand up for their fellow citizens. We remember your incredible sacrifices and your spirit of unity that changed a nation and touched the world.
The unity of purpose that you showed three years ago is now part of Libya’s proud legacy, but it is also the promise of its future. I saw that promise recently in a group of young Libyans who again came together and surprised the world, this time in a football stadium in Cape Town. Since you beat Ghana, a team that the United States plays in the World Cup, Americans, believe me, we were paying close attention.
And in a grainy photo of Ali Zoghdani, smiling in the rain with the Libyan flag draped over his shoulders, the world saw some of Libya’s great joy in winning the Africa Cup of Nations. In that moment, Ali was celebrating what young people from across Libya achieved together. Only by understanding the common aspirations were they able to accomplish so much. I hope that you share a similar spirit as you celebrate today’s anniversary and chart Libya’s future in the days to come.
The American people really want to get to know you. We want to learn from you, we want to work with you during this time of great possibility. And there’s much that we have achieved together already. By working, for instance, to remove stockpiles of chemical weapons left behind by the Qadhafiregime, we have created a more secure future for our own children and children across the world. By promoting trade between our nations, we are working to connect Libyans to the global economy and to greater opportunity.
The United States is also supporting the efforts of Libya’s military as it trains new recruits and works to create a modern military that represents and protects all Libyans. And by sending Deborah Jones, one of our most accomplished diplomats, to serve as our Ambassador in Tripoli, the United States sends a strong message about the importance of our partnership with Libya.
Writing a constitution, creating economic opportunity, building a modern military — none of this is easy. As Americans, we know this from our own history. Our nation is still a work in progress, but we are at our best when we manage to bridge our differences, even as we debate the most difficult questions. The questions that you face as a nation in the coming months couldn’t be any more important. What do a young doctor in Benghazi, a mother with young children in Zintan, an engineering student in Misrata, and a grandfather from Sebha have in common? What kind of constitution will help each of them live in peace and provide prosperity for their families? What are the rights and responsibilities that define Libyans as citizens and the future that they want to shape together? Only the Libyan people, and their chosen representatives, can answer any of these questions.
As friends, the American people stand with you as you mark this important anniversary and as you confront these critical questions. As partners, we look forward to your answers to those questions. And we look forward to working with you to meet the challenges that lie ahead, and to meet them together. And we look forward to helping to shape the future in the years to come.
